Updates

ChordFrog is actively developed. Every change that reaches the App Store is listed here, newest first — so you can see exactly what is being worked on rather than guessing whether the app is still maintained.

8 releases since launch on 31 May 2026. Last update 30 August 2026.

  1. Version 1.2.1

    Latest

The version that carries Remove Ads. The purchase itself is not switched on yet.

    • Remove Ads will be one payment, not a subscription: it takes away the banner and the full-screen ad between rounds, and nothing else. The app stays free either way and nothing is gated behind it.
    • It is not on sale yet. The App Store agreement that lets an app charge for anything is still going through, and until it clears there is nothing to buy — everyone sees the ads.
    • No further update will be needed. The option appears in the app you already have the moment Apple switches it on.
  2. Version 1.2

Siri and Shortcuts that answer where you are, without the app taking over the screen.

    • Ask for a chord out loud and it sounds while you stay on your sheet music. It no longer pulls the app to the front to do it.
    • Identify a chord from MIDI notes and get the answer back, without opening the app.
    • Shortcuts actions now return values you can pass on to the next step: the notes in a chord, your weakest chords, and how well you know any single chord.
  3. Version 1.1

Chord challenges you can post, a screen that shows which chords still beat you, and a much better ear in Free Pond.

    • Share a Challenge: pick up to three chords and ChordFrog renders a 9:16 video — the chord plays, a countdown runs, then the answer, or a cliffhanger if you would rather people guess. Goes out through the normal share sheet.
    • My Pond: every chord you have practised, weakest first, with a one-tap drill of the ones you keep missing. The app had been recording this since 1.0.2 and never showed it to anyone.
    • Free Pond now names a seventh chord voiced without its fifth — the way people actually play one — instead of coming up blank.
    • Nine more chords recognised: 9, maj9, m9, 13, m11, 7♭9, 7♯9, 7♭5 and 7♯5. Recognised only — the quizzes still ask for the same chords as before, on purpose.
    • Siri and Shortcuts: ask for a drill, ask for your weakest chords, or ask how your ear training is going and get an answer out loud.
  4. Version 1.0.5

Two crashes gone: one when plugging in a MIDI keyboard, one when a call arrived mid-practice.

    • Connecting a MIDI keyboard and playing your first notes no longer quits the app.
    • A phone call or an alarm interrupting a session no longer ends it.
    • Both paths gained test coverage at the same time, so they stay fixed.
  5. Version 1.0.3

Cleared a leftover developer switch out of Settings.

    • Removed a diagnostics toggle that was never meant to ship to players.
    • Everything from the previous release stayed exactly as it was.
  6. Version 1.0.2

Sharper reference chords, steadier scoring, and a much better fit on iPad.

    • Reference chords now sound true to their name.
    • Leap Quiz keeps its scoring steady through fast repeated taps.
    • Clearer controls and layout across iPhone and iPad, including resizable windows.
    • Improved VoiceOver support on the on-screen piano keys.
    • Gentler motion throughout, respecting the system reduce-motion setting.
  7. Version 1.0.1

Housekeeping release with no changes to how the app plays.

  8. Version 1.0

ChordFrog arrived on the App Store.

    • Four practice modes: Lily Pad Drill, Free Pond, Leap Quiz and Travel Chords.
    • Five progressive levels, from the chords in every campfire song to the full vocabulary.
    • Real-time chord recognition from any USB or Bluetooth MIDI keyboard, including inversions and slash chords.
    • Two modes that need no hardware at all, so practice travels.

What's being worked on

ChordFrog is built by one person in Finland, so there is no roadmap with dates on it — promises like that tend to age badly. What there is instead is a steady cadence: small releases every few weeks, driven by what players actually run into.

One thing worth naming, because people ask: a paid Remove Ads option. It is built, and it shipped inside 1.2.1 — what is missing is the App Store agreement that lets an app charge for anything, which is still going through. Until that clears there is nothing to buy, and everyone sees the ads. When it does clear, the option turns up in the app you already have, without another update.

ChordFrog is free and stays free either way — every mode, every level, every chord, with nothing held back — and the ads are what pay for it. The purchase will simply be a way to pay for it differently if you would rather. It will buy no extra content, because there is no extra content to sell.

If something is broken or missing, the fastest way to influence what ships next is to say so. Write to timo@skadi.chat — it goes straight to the person who writes the code.
